LOL: All West teams are out - US

Yesterday, the last team of the West is excreted by the Lol Worlds 2021: This is for the first time since 2017 only Asians in the semifinals. 17 of the remaining 20 players at the World Championships Inleague of Legends are South Korean. The coach of the last US team explains why that is so and why that remains so if nothing changes.

That s the situation :

Yesterday Gen G. hit the Americans of Cloud 9 in the last quarter-finals with 3-0. This is the 3rd team from South Korea in the semi-final. The 4th team from South Korea, the Church of Chovy , has only excreted because that had to compete against another team from South Korea: against T1 with the Unkillable Demon King Faker. The South Koreans are so dominant at the Worlds 2021 so that from the remaining 20 players 17 from South Korea. Because in Korea, only Koreans play. And the last team from China, Edward Gaming, has 2 Korean legionaries in his ranks. With Viper, this is the probably best ADC in the world.

Prior to the Worlds, teams from Asia were highly favored to win the Worlds. But the bookmakers thought that at least Mad Lions or Fnatic could hold halfway - these hopes quickly declined rapidly. Since 2017, Lol was not so tight in the hands of teams from Asia, as now.

It s extremely unfair

That says a US coach : The coach of Cloud 9, Alfonso Mithy Rodríguez, explained on a press conference after defeat, why the West is so weak (via YouTube):

I think as the whole league system is designed, it is extremely unfair. The Korean teams make training matches against the LPL and the LJL, against all these teams, and we remain only the teams from Europe and North America.

Mithy, Coach Cloud 9

According to Mithy, Koreans could play against the strong competition, while the best teams from Europe and the US can only compete against comparatively weak teams. Because time differences and restrictions prevent teams from the West to compete against the world-class Temas from Asia.

A solution to the problem would be boot camps in South Korea. But there is little time:

So that a team out of the West cuts out well, we would have to complete boot camps in South Korea for a long time and take part in tournaments there. But that is very difficult because we have to play a lot of meaningless games in Spring Split if we could actually make a boat camp.

Mithy, Coach Cloud 9

It would be important, Mithy says that you allow it lol teams to tour the world and to better and more exciting tournaments on an international level.

@MAVI and @Kronten Gaming talk about invite in PMGC 2021 is possible or not ? Mithy believes, if nothing changes, it will be very difficult for the West, ever to cut well with such a tournament.

Without the top team G2, the west looks very old in Lol

Does he right? From the point of view of the US, he certainly is right. In the US, no team has reached a team more top level in Lol for years.

But his analysis does not work for Europe so well: Europe had the last years with G2 a team that played around the World Cup. Even without boot camps in South Korea.

And the performance density has become wider in Europe in recent years with the strengthening of Rogue and Mad Lions, but the performance peak is apparently decreasing from year to year.

Here is the question of how to explain the extreme performance of G2 in the last 2 years:

G2 was in 2019 in the final of the Worlds and had on the way there, DWG Kia turned off - then the still Damwon Gaming 2 years later, G2 has not even qualified for the Worlds and DWG Kia looks like the best lol team of all time.

In 2019, G2 already had the competition hardness , the DWG Kia lacked. The young Koreans were considered training world champion , which crumbled under the pressure of the competition. But G2 was only 1 year ago. 2020 they flew out chances of DWG Kia.

In Europe, it seems apparently to give problems with motivation and passion to improve even when actually is already by far the best team of the continent. Especially under Covid, the stars apparently fell hard to motivate themselves: the competitions took place without audience, the players apparently fell the blanket on the head.

If Mithy says the Games in Spring Split are meaningless, it shows the problem of lol teams to motivate themselves throughout the year and work on performance. This seems to be more likely to fall outside teams from South Korea, with great performance fluctuations in individual teams in China.

But Korea really seems to be the dominant region in Lol at the moment. Maybe Bootcamps could change the long term. In the short term and in the medium term, it looks with the opportunities for teams from Europe and the USA, which are blurred with the Worlds, but gloomy. For 2022, much of it will depend on how G2 reuses. Otherwise, teams like Mad Lions, Fnatic or Rogue would have to go a huge step forward. Although the US teams have a lot of money, they can obviously do not buy international success. Lol: durable master supposedly sold half team and German coaches - with price tag
